The Battery500 consortium just published a perspective in Nature Energy discussing the critical conditions needed to reach a 500 Wh/kg rechargeable Li metal battery. Cathode loading, electrolyte amount and Li foil thickness are analyzed as key factors that impact the cell-level cycle life. Several important strategies are identified that reduce electrolyte-Li reaction, protect Li surfaces and stabilize anode architectures for long-cycling high-specific-energy cells.
